Oh Danny Boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling….

March 17, 2010

Happy St. Paddy’s Day, vidheads. I’m not Irish, I’m German/Native American mutt, but, like many inhabitants of this great country, I’ll take advantage of any other country’s religious/independence holiday as an excuse to get drunk (Cinco de Mayo, here I come!). Besides, I’ve been to Ireland once, so I’m as close to Irish as you can get without actually being Irish, right? Plus, I like Irish coffee. That has to count for something. And I like Celtic music. I hate to post a music video twice in a row, but I thought I’d pay homage our neighbors to the far northeast with a musical tribute. Although they are undeniably an American group, my absolute favorite band for the past decade-plus (and running) has been known to insert a bagpipe intro or interlude here and there. Seriously, I have been sprung on Korn since I first heardĀ them when I was 16. And although the band may be more well-known for its popularization of the genre-bending type of music known as rap-rock, lead singer Jonathan Davis can seriously crank out a tune on the bagpipes, as heard in 1994 single “Shoots and Ladders.” The remainder of the song is tiresome, repetitive incessant nursery rhyme verse rambling, but the original bagpipe intro is notably noteworthy.

You gotta love a man who can play his bag. Pipes. And has the bags to wear a skirt. And name his sons Pirate and Zeppelin. Ah, watching this video brings back memories of when I was 19 and living in an apartment on my own, and this oldĀ dude in an apartment building across from mine used to come out on his balcony wearing a kilt and playing his bagpipe. Now that I think of it, it probably wasn’t as normal as it seemed at the time.
